MLB: Roberts Report (July 8th)

Jone's jack in last night was all the Rangers needed to take the division lead.
The Roberts Report reflects the very opinionated view of it’s author, KC Roberts. Not to be mistake for your traditional Power Rankings, the Roberts Report reflects KC’s personal rankings of the teams. That is not to say that he is not subjective (the Blue Jays, Raptors, and Cowboys won’t be #1 every time) but he may not agree with the popular belief. If you don’t agree or think that someone should be higher or lower let us know in the comments.
So after this weekend’s special edition of the Roberts Report we are back to our regular mid-week release. A lot has changed in the last 4 days, 3 game winning streaks are over, hitting slumps gone, and hell even Arizona is on a 5 game winning streak. So there will be a few teams that move in this week’s edition of the Roberts Report:
1) LA Dodgers (Prev 1) (53-31): The Dodgers are 3-1 since Manny’s return and beat down the beleaguered Mets last night, winning 8-0. With 2 more games against the Mets their winning streak will probably extend to 4.
2) NY Yankees (Prev 2) (50-34): Won 3 of 4 against the Jays over the weekend, impressive but nothing special. Wang beating Halladay… one would have thought impossible. If Wang never wins another game this season he can still claim something not many pitchers can, a win against Roy.
3) Boston Red Sox (Prev 3) (51-33) : The Bad News: After a series loss to the Mariners the Sox are leading the AL East by just one game. The Good News: they have the A’s and Royals before the break to help extend their lead.
4) Texas Rangers (Prev 8 ) (47-36): Josh Hamilton is back, they just swept the Rays, and they won the rubber match against the Angels to take the division lead. Things are looking good in Texas.
5) San Fransisco Giants (Prev 11) (46-38): Lincecum is a Cy Young contender and the face of the Giants revival, but there are a few other guys helping out. Matt Cain is 10-2, Barry Zito is 4-2 in his last 7 starts, and 22 year old Pablo Sandoval is having a stellar rookie season: 13 HR, 48 RBI, .945 OPS.
6) St. Louis Cardinals: (Prev 4) (46-40) They continue to slowly climb up the standings. They entered the weekend tied with the Brewers for the NL Central lead but now have a 1 game lead.
7) LA Angels (Prev 5) (46-37): Their best starters, Lackey and Santana, are struggling with a combined record of 4-8. Santana lost last night to give the Rangers the division lead, Ultimate Standings jinx?
8 ) Detroit Tigers (Prev 7) (46-38): When anyone beats Grienke it’s impressive, but when a rookie pitcher pitcher does it it’s incredible. French could be the third young star pitcher on this Tigers squad.
9) Colorado Rockies (Prev 10) (45-39): Swept the Nationals. Not overly difficult but a sweep none the less.
10) Tampa Bay Rays (Prev 9) (46-39): After getting swept by the Rangers the Rays have bounced back against Toronto. But with Price vs. the Doc the sweep is unlikely.
11) Chicago White Sox (Prev 5) (44-40): The 9 game winning streak is over after 2 straight losses to the Royals. Oh well, 2 games and counting.
12) Philadelphia Phillies (Prev 16) (44-38): Absolutely shit stomped the Reds 22-1 and won the series tonight. Not a bad week so far for the reigning champs.
13) Milwaukee Brewers (Prev 13) (44-40): With a win over the Cards last night the Brewers are within a game of the division leaders. Its Fielder vs. Pujols, who’s going to come out on top?
14) Florida Marlins (Prev 20) (44-42): They are the only team from here till 20 to be over .500 in their last 10 games. Probably not the way they wanted to make the top 15, but fuck it they made it right? Now just 3 back for the NL wild card.
15) Minnesota Twins (Prev 17) (43-42): We found out who else is on the Twins. Carlos Gomez and his ridiculous grand slam stealing catch! Despite that catch the Twins still lost.
16) Chicago Cubs (Prev 14) (41-41): I guess I was right, after a short 3 game winning streak the Cubs have lost 2 straight. Will this team ever win consistently?
17) Seattle Mariners (Prev 15) (43-41): After winning a series against the Red Sox for the first time in years, the Mariners lost to the lowly Orioles. With King Felix on the mound hopefully they can turn the tide against the division leading Rangers.
18) Cincinnati Reds (41-42) (Prev 18): Got embarassed by the Phillies 22-1 but bounced back for the close win the next night. The Reds would have slipped if the Jays didn’t suck that much more recently.
19) Houston Astros (Prev 24) (41-42): With a 3 game series against the Nationals before the All Star break and only 3.5 back of the Rangers, the Astros have a shot to be close to the division lead heading into the All Star game.
20) Atlanta Braves (Prev 19) (41-43): 2 straight wins cancel out 2 straight losses. A scratch for the Braves.
21) Toronto Blue Jays (Prev 12) (43-43): The Jays are 2-8 in their last 10 games, released BJ Ryan who will make over 20 million for sitting on his ass, and have lost 4 straight series. FAIL.
22) NY Mets (Prev 22) (40-43): I can’t emphasis this enough, the Mets are the most dissapointing team in baseball! Good thing everyone below them sucks just a little more.
23) Arizona Diamondbacks (Prev 29) (36-49): The Diamondbacks have won 5 straight since our last article. The playoffs are out of the question but this team can build confidence for the future when Upton, Reynolds, Young, Parra, and Drew are more experienced (all under 26).
24) Baltimore Orioles (Prev 21) (38-47): The Orioles might be the elite team in the AL East in 5 years with all their young talent, but for now they are the cellar dwellers.
25) Pittsburgh Pirates (Prev 23) (38-47): Are you getting bored of all the young prospects/future talk at the bottom of the rankings? I don’t care, Andrew McCutchen is going to be something special in a couple years.
26) KC Royals (Prev 28) (36-48): Zach Greinke lost!
27) Oakland Athletics (Prev 26) (35-48): Garciaparra got a rousing welcome back to Fenway, it was pretty amazing. Unfortunatly the A’s lost the series.
28) Cleveland Indians (Prev 27) (33-52): Have lost 8 of their last 10. It seems like a lifetime ago that the Indians lead the league with 97 wins, beat the Yankees in the ALDS, and took a 3-1 lead in the ALCS before losing to the eventual champions, the Red Sox. Wait that was only 2 years ago?
29) San Diego Padres (Prev 25) (35-49): Just got swept by Arizona and have lost 8 of their last 10. Now they have to face the Giants. Not a great way to head into the All Start break.
30) Washington Nationals (Prev 30) (24-58): Thank god these guys aren’t in Montreal anymore. Not just the worst team in baseball, the worst team in American sports.

William Clay Ford would like to have a word with you regarding that last statement.
July 9th, 2009 at 7:41 pmThe Lions had one terrible season, admittedly the worst ever in football history, but before last season they did win 7 games.
The Nationals have been within the bottom 1/3 of the MLB since ‘05.
But it’s hard to compare teams across sports. I would say 1a and 1b.
July 9th, 2009 at 8:35 pmJoke (noun)-something said or done to provoke laughter or cause amusement.
Believe me, I have NO interest in getting into a Lions vs. Nationals discussion.
July 9th, 2009 at 8:56 pmhaha i know it was a joke. I laughed. just wanted to clarify that I wasn’t being totally serious when I crowned the Nationals the worst in America.
