2009 Wimbledon Final: Roger/Roddick

Is this the year they finally switch places?

It’s here! The matchup we have all been waiting for, Roger Federer vs. Andy Roddick. Federer has a record of 3-0 against Andy Roddick in Grand Slam Finals, 2-0 at Wimbledon, and 18-2 in all career matchups. Their last matchup at the Old England Club was in 2005 where Federer beat Roddick in straight sets to win his 3rd of eventually 5 straight Wimbledon Finals.

It’s only 10 am here on the East Coast but over in England it is already 3 pm and the Championship match is already in the second set. As it currently stands Roddick is winning 1 sets to 0, after winning the first set 7-5. Is today the day that Roddick finally beats his old rival in a Grand Slam Final? Up one set early it seems possible but don’t expect it to be easy against Federer.

I will be watching the match and giving updates on the action. If you would rather watch the game live on NBC’s delayed feed, I understand some people enjoy watching live games 2 hours after they have occured, that’s fine with me but you should probably stop reading right now. Enjoy the match!

Updates: (9:56) Both players are playing extremely well on serve and the second set is tied 3-3. Roddick’s serve has been almost unhittable where as Federer is forcing Roddick wide on the serve and hitting a winner opposite court on his return.

(10:10) More of the same. If this goes to a tiebreak Roddick has been fabulous in tiebreaks so far in this tournament. 4-4

(10:22) Both players have been unstoppable on serve. The second set is heading to a tiebreak!

(10:25) 4-1 Roddick. A big lead for Roddick. Can Roger recover?

(10:28) 6-2 Roddick. Federer has to play his best tennis if he wants to come back.

(10:31) 8-6 Federer! Federer just won 6 straight points! That was the most thrilling tie breaker I have ever seen! Destiny?

(10:51) Just when a break seemed possible, Roddick forced deuce and won his game. 4-4. Who will slip up first?

(11:00) Neither player has looked beatable on serve. Another tiebreak seems inevitable.

(11:10) Who would have guessed? A tie break! The winner of this has a huge advantage going into the 4th set.

(11:14) 3-1 Federer. Roger just broke Roddick on both his serves!

(11:15) 5-1 Federer. Can Roddick mimic Federer’s amazing comeback?

(11:18) 6-5 Federer. Huge point!

(11:19) 3rd set Federer. One more set for his 15th Grand Slam and 6th Wimbledon. Can Roddick recover?

(11:28) 2-1 Roddick in the 4th set. Roddick has looked so good during his serve. So why can’t he serve that well in the tie breaks?

(11:33) 3-1 Roddick. Finally a break! Roddick is back in this match!

(11:38) 4-1 Roddick. Federer forced deuce and it seemed like he might break Roddick, but Roddick won two long rallies to take a big lead in the 4th.

(11:39) Random Question: Why the hell do they put the families in the same box? You would think they would split them up. Or at least not have them one row apart! You would think there would have been a fracas between nut job wives in the past.

(11:41) 4-2 Roddick. Can Roger pull off another magical comeback?

(11:44) 5-2 Roddick. An emphatic game point serve from Roddick. His 19th ace of the match!

(11:48) 5-3 Roddick. Roddick had a scary fall in the game but would be alright. He now serves for the match.

(11:51) We have a 5th set! I don’t even know who I want to win. On the one hand my favorite player going for his 15th Grand Slam and almost certainly reclaiming his #1 ranking from the evil Nadal. On the other hand Roddick, my second favorite player, going for his first Wimbledon title in 3 tries and his second Grand Slam of his career. Lets just hope it’s a close finish!

(11:56) It seems like Roddick’s serve has become less effective over the match. Is Roddick tiring or is Federer adapting to his serve?

(12:00) 1-1. Roddick just shut me up, hitting an ace and a winner to take his service game.

(12:13) 4-3 Federer. Roger won the game with 3 aces and an easy winner. Federer has come close to breaking Roddick 3 times already in the match but never executed, will he finally do it now when it counts?

(12:16) No. 4-4.

(12:19) 5-4 Federer. If Roger breaks Roddick for the first time he wins his 15th Grand Slam! If not we could be in for a long day of tennis.

(12:21) Clear your schedule people! 5-5.

(12:55) 11-10 Federer. It seems like this match isn’t ever going to end. Great news for tennis fans, terrible news for NBC and fans of Datline NBC.

(1:00) DEUCE!!!

(1:20) Another hold for Roddick. That is 3 straight deuces on his serve however.

(1:28) Roger Federer is your 2009 Wimbledon Champion after winning a marathon 5th set 16-14. Congratulations Andy Roddick, you deserved it just as much as Federer. This will go down as one of the greatest tennis matches ever!
