The Morning After: feat. A Comeback… from a Comeback!

Posted by: KC Roberts

Angels Rangers Baseball

A daily article (Mon-Fri) from KC Roberts discussing the games from the night before. Featuring a game of the night, 5 other games from each sport, and suggestions of what to watch today.

Game of the Night

Texas Rangers 9   LA Angels 7

Importance: Not many things better than an exciting comeback in baseball… especially when the home team comes back after the comeback (confused yet??). And who says baseball isn’t exciting?

Player of the game: Hank Blalock – the man was a machine last night. He hit nothing but extra base hits, started the scoring in the 4th and ended it in the 9th, both on home runs. Stat Line: 3 for 5, 1 2B, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 3 R

X Factor: If not for Blalock, Juan Rivera would have had the play of the game and would have be the hero if the Angels won. But that didn’t happen so Rivera is the X Factor and not the Player of the Game Stat Line: 2 for 5, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 R

Play of the game: Hank Blalock’s walk off home run. It’s so obvious I feel stupid writing it.

Turning Point: Instead of getting repetitive I’m just gonna let you figure that one out. Sometimes a thrilling end makes for a very dull recap, so to make up for it watch this hilariously awful Billy Mays tribute!

MLB:

Red Sox 6   Orioles 5

Importance: Red Sox win in extras after the Orioles bullpen falls apart and Papelbon is the career saves leader in Boston. Boston fans are ecstatic, the rest of North America hates Boston.

Player of the Game: Brad Bergesen – 8 innings, 4 H, 6 SO, 1 ER, Win ND (thanks alot Jim Johnson)

How they lost it: Jim Johnson couldn’t get a single batter out, gave up a home run to Youkilis, and put the runner on that would eventually tie the game. Send him to the Minors!

Cardinals 2   Giants 1

Importance: Albert Pujols is playing, do you need any other reason? Fine, the game went to extras.

Player of the Game: Adam Wainwright – 9 innings, 6 H, 3 BB, 12 SO, 1 ER, ND

Game Winner: Colby Rasmus is a lucky dude. After his easy pop up was dropped in foul territory and a questionable called ball at 2-2 he hit the walk off home run. But lets not kid ourselves if he had gotten out you know who was up next and would have won it.
Mets 1   Brewers 0

Importance: Incredibly boring for the casual fan but a pitching duel that had true fans drooling.

Player of the Game: Yovani Gallardo – 7 innings, 5 H, 2 BB, 12 SO, 1 ER, Loss

The one mistake: Gallardo was the best player on the field last night but made one mistake that cost him, Churches RBI single in the 6th.

Dodgers 1   Rockies 0

Importance: The Dodgers manage to win another close one! With Manny back on Friday it’s almost not even fair.

Player of the Game: LA pitchers (4 combined for the shut out) – 9 innings, 3 H, 6 BB, 10 SO, 0 ER, Shutout

Game Winner: Furcal’s pinch hit RBI single in the 8th.

Tennis:

- Andy Murray, Britain’s sole hope to win their championship, beat surprise quarter finalist Ferrero in straight sets. Murray moves on to face the winner of Hewitt or Roddick for a fun Britain vs. her old colonies match.

- Andy Roddick won his game against Leyton Hewitt which I found myself torn during. Hewitt was my favorite player when I was very young but I have always rooted for Roddick, who is probably my second favorite player behind Federer now. This was the game of the tournament, going 5 sets with 2 tiebreaks. Easily the most thrilling match I have seen this year.

- Rodger Federer won easily and moves on to his 20th straight Grand Slam semi final.

- Tommy Haas continued his run with an upset of #4 Djokovic. Don’t look for it to continue as he is facing the best grass court player in the world, Roger Federer, in the semis.
